REAL History

Revolución y Evolución de Alabama de Latine (REAL)

  • Revolución y Evolución de Alabama de Latine (REAL) was founded in response to the urgent need for culturally specific services, programs, and advocacy for Latine and immigrant LGBTQ+ communities in Alabama. Recognizing that these communities face unique challenges—including language barriers, limited access to affirming care, discrimination, and social isolation—REAL emerged to fill a critical gap in support and visibility.

  • Our early work began with direct outreach across Central Alabama and into rural communities such as Cullman. We engaged LGBTQ+ Latine individuals through community support meetings, social gatherings, cookouts hosted in homes and in our office, and one-on-one connections. These gatherings created some of the first safe, welcoming spaces for LGBTQ+ Latine people in the region—spaces where participants could be seen, understood, and affirmed.

  • To cultivate emerging leadership, we established the first LGBTQ+ Latine Subcommittee, composed of three dedicated members who received mentorship and training to strengthen their leadership skills. These leaders played a pivotal role in promoting REAL’s mission by facilitating events, coordinating social-media campaigns, and encouraging other community members to seek support and engage with our services. Their work continues to inspire trust and build collective resilience.

  • Our LGBTQ+ Latine participants and staff have also been instrumental in shaping public-facing advocacy efforts. They planned and launched our “Coming Out” and “PRIDE” campaign videos—initiatives aimed at reducing stigma, fostering pride, and uplifting LGBTQ+ Latinx voices across the state. Participants have also helped promote HIV/STI testing events and other community resources. We also provide space for creativity to perform for our drag, trans  and community.

  • In 2022, REAL made history by participating for the first time in the Birmingham Central PRIDE Parade—the only LGBTQ+ Latine-led organization represented in Alabama. The following year, in June 2023, REAL was honored as one of the Grand Marshals of the Birmingham PRIDE Parade in recognition of our service, advocacy, and unwavering commitment to the LGBTQ+ community.

  • REAL continues to invest in the next generation of LGBTQ+ leaders by offering leadership opportunities, educational scholarships, and incentives for community engagement. Our programs prioritize the voices and needs of our participants, ensuring that they remain at the center of our mission and growth.

  • We extend our deepest gratitude to all the staff, volunteers, and community members who have contributed to REAL’s development over the years—especially Alexander Bautista and Pablo Hernandez, the first staff members whose vision and dedication laid the foundation for this program.
